The Dia de los Muertos altar is a very special way of celebrating one of Mexico's most famous holidays, the Day of the Dead. Families set up altars in their homes during the weeks leading up to November 1st. This is a special way to remember those loved ones who have died, and to celebrate their lives.
El Dia de los Muertos is celebrated throughout Mexico and the U.S. Southwest. It coincides with All Souls and All Saints Days. On November 1st and 2nd, people remember those who are deceased. November 1st is considered El Dia de los Angelitos (The Day of the Little Angels), the day to remember children. November 2nd is the traditional El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead), the day to remember everyone who has passed.
Altars are decorated with pictures of the deceased. Trinkets they were fond of, symbols they would understand, and gifts are left to communicate to them that they are always in the hearts of those they left behind.

The Day of the Dead altars are also displayed in classrooms, libraries, museums, and parks in both Mexico and the United States. Not only do they encourage an understanding of the Mexican culture, but serve as a way of honoring their traditions.
All Saints Catholic School has an altar set up at The Living Arts of Tulsa, 307 E. Brady St. (downtown Tulsa), from October 27th to November 1st in the Gallery.
(A special "thank you" to Mrs. Proctor, our art teacher, for this wonderful project and for setting up our altar.)
