"Mi Familia" Trees Created By 2nd Grade

Both second grade classes have been working on learning the names of family members in Spanish. In order to make this a more personal experience, each child created their own family tree. The children first drew and colored a large tree on a piece of poster board. Next, the children learned how to graph their family beginning with their parents (mi padre y mi madre--my father and my mother). They branched off from each parent to their grandparents (mi abuelo y mi abuela (my grandfather and my grandmother). Finally, they branched down from their parents to themselves and their siblings (mi hermano(s) y mi hermana(s)). Sometimes family pets were included in the sibling section. :) The teacher assisted with the blocks of the tree, adding blocks as needed in the sibling section. Students were responsible for providing photographs of family members, or drawing and coloring illustrations of family members. Students were also responsible for labeling each family member (for example: mi padre: Matt). I am so proud of the children. They took great pride in sharing their trees with our school community in the halls of the Fine Arts Building.
